Rakesh Roshan’s Karan Arjun, which starred Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, is ready for a re-release and Rakesh, across many interviews, has been sharing many anecdotes from the making of the film. In a recent interview, Rakesh was asked about the popular dialogue ‘What a joke!’ which was said by Aasif Sheikh’s character Suraj. The character was previously supposed to be played by Gulshan Grover and Rakesh even shot with the actor for a couple of days but had to fire him because of his tardiness.

In a chat with Siddharth Kannan, Rakesh said, “Gulshan Grover is a very fine actor. He was my first choice for the film. But he was doing a lot of films at that time. For 11 am reporting time, he would show up at 4 pm. This happened for a couple of days.” After observing this for a couple of days, Rakesh decided to make some changes and requested Gulshan to step aside.

“I called him and said ‘Gulshan, I won’t be able to work like this’. He suggested ‘Rakesh ji, take my close up and let me go’. I said ‘no, that’s not how this works’. I told him that we will work in some other film,” he said and shared that they were already in the middle of the shoot at that time when he told Gulshan, “Let’s part ways. He left.”

Rakesh shared that he cancelled the shoot on that day and decided to look for another actor so they could continue the shoot. “That very evening I went to look for another actor to cast and I found Aasif Sheikh. That day, the shoot was cancelled. Next day, he joined us. He was very new then. I explained everything to him. I told him that you have a line here ‘What a joke!’ I told him that I won’t prompt you and it’s not written anywhere, you use it as you like it. When you organically feel that you have to use this line, you say it. He only said it whenever he felt like it and I would say yes, this is the right way,” he said.

Aasif Sheikh is now known for appearing in the long running comedy show Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain.
