On Hrithik Roshan-Sussanne Khan’s divorce, Zayed Khan says Mumbai has distractions: ‘It can be a tough city for a marriage to survive in’

Actor Zayed Khan spoke about his sister Sussanne Khan’s separation from Hrithik Roshan some years ago, and said that their family chose to be supportive of the decision instead of turning on each other. He said that the choice they were all faced with was whether to live in anger or to continue living happily, and they chose the latter. Zayed also spoke about his relationship with Hrithik, whom he described as a ‘gem of a person’. Both Hrithik and Sussanne are now seeing other people.

In a chat with Subhojit Ghosh on YouTube, Zayed opened up about his warm bond with Hrithik, and said that Mumbai can be a difficult place for a marriage to survive in. He also spoke warmly about his sister Sussanne, whom he said has a ‘very strong spirit’. “We are a very modern family. There’s a saying, blood is thicker than water. If two people don’t want to be with each other, but they have many other things in common, one must understand and support them. There is something which lies ahead of that; family, children, everybody… Responsibilities are above and beyond all of that. We are a very open-minded family, as long as there is respect for each other. We inculcate that not only into ourselves, but also our children,” Zayed said.

He continued, “Irrespective of whatever happens, we never badmouth any side. We make them realise that certain things are the way they are, and they’re going to be like this. We can all be happy together, or we can be sad together. What would you choose? I’m very close to my brother Hrithik as well. He’s a gem of a guy, with a heart of gold. Both their partners… Saba is a wonderful lady, Arsalan is also a very good boy… What the hell, life goes on.”

Asked if he felt bad when his sister was trolled after the divorce, he said, “You have to have a thick skin. How your family galvanises together to give you emotional support, these things matter. Our family is like a rock. Anything happens to one of us, it happens to all of us. I have nothing to say beyond, these are things that one has to look at maturely. It could happen to anybody. Also, look at our city, we live in a city where there are so many distractions. We don’t live in Dalhousie. It’s a tough city to survive for a lot of marriages, let alone my own family. Needless to say, we are an unmovable force,” he concluded. Hrithik and Sussanne were childhood sweethearts; they tied the knot in 2000 and split in 2014. They have two sons.
