Despite flopping at the box office when it was released in 1999, EVV Satyanarayana’s Sooryavansham, featuring Amitabh Bachchan in a dual role, has achieved a cult following over the years, largely due to its frequent telecast on TV channel Sony Max. A few years ago, Bachchan’s son Abhishek Bachchan himself called it “one of the most successful films” of Sony Max.
Also starring Jayasudha, Soundarya, Rachana Banerjee, and Anupam Kher, among others, the movie featured actor Mukesh Rishi as well in a key role. Now, Rishi has shared an anecdote about discussing Sooryavansham with Bachchan while working together in Surender Reddy’s Chiranjeevi-starrer Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (2019).
During a chat with Lehren Retro, Rishi recalled, “Towards the end of the film (Sye Raa), there’s a scene where Amit ji’s character and mine appear together. I mentioned to him that Sooryavansham was coming (on TV) many times. He responded by saying yes and ‘hum bhi hairan hote hain’ (that he too was surprised about it). He observed that many people have ended up watching the movie now. We briefly discussed the film at that time.”
“Another interesting thing was, in the evening, after the shoot, Amit ji and I were staying in the same hotel. I used to hit the gym many times, and he too used to go to the same gym. So, such small encounters with him used to happen. But it gave me immense happiness and fun whenever I met him face to face, even though such occurrences were few,” he added.
On the occasion of Sooryavansham completing 16 years, Amitabh Bachchan expressed that he felt the movie has a personal connection with many. “SOORYAVANSHAM…16 years… many still watch this film repeatedly…it has a personal connect with many,” Bollywood’s Shahenshah tweeted.
Sooryavansham was the Hindi remake of the 1997 Tamil film Surya Vamsam, starring R Sarath Kumar and Devayani in the lead roles.
Mukesh Rishi was last seen in Rohit Shetty’s action thriller series Indian Police Force, starring Sidharth Malhotra, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, and Vivek Oberoi in the lead roles.
