Madhoo says both she and Ajay Devgn weren’t nervous for Phool Aur Kaante: ‘If It was Govinda or Rishi Kapoor…’
Phool Aur Kaante marked the Bollywood debuts of its lead stars, Madhoo and Ajay Devgn. The Kuku Kohli film was a blockbuster.

Madhoo had always wanted to act in films, but her first offer to be a part of a Hindi movie came knocking on her doors when she least expected it. Madhoo recently revealed that her father had said that she should either study further or he would get her married off to someone. But Madhoo didn’t want to do either of those things, so she began applying for jobs.
However, it was sheer chance that she somehow got approached for Ajay Devgn’s Bollywood debut Phool Aur Kaante, which turned out to be hit. Madhoo said she was playing carrom when the phone rang and filmmaker Kuku Kohli offered her to be a part of the film. However, she turned the phone towards her father as she was busy playing the game.
Speaking with Times of India, Madhoo said, “They discussed the remuneration, and I was signed on. Later, I found out that there was another actress who was signed for the film but she dropped out of the project due to some reasons.”
Madhoo said that when she came on board, the cast had completed nearly 60 per cent of the shoot, and that she had no clue who she was being paired with, but she did it anyway as she wanted to be in front of the camera.
In the same chat, Madhoo also opened up about one of her first co-stars, Ajay Devgn. She spoke of the artiste in warm terms and said neither were nervous about their first Hindi film outing: “Agar samne Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Jackie Shroff aise koi established actors hote toh I would have felt nervous. But Ajay and I were from Mithibai college, so we had that Juhu vibe and Veeruji was my father’s friend.”
Phool Aur Kaante was declared to a hit for its time, earning around Rs 12 crore. The movie also starred Amrish Puri in a pivotal role and was helmed by Kuku Kohli.
