Dog races stole the show on the first day of the three-day 29th kabaddi tournament organised by the Baidwan Kabaddi Club in memory of Jathedar Hanuman Singh in Mohali’s Sohana on Friday.
A total of 122 dogs participated in 61 races, drawing huge excitement from spectators who thronged the ground near Amity School in Sector 79, Sohana, in large numbers.
However, it was Sandeep Ambala’s dog named ‘All Eyes On Me’ that clinched the top prize, a motorcycle, winning the main race, organisers said, adding that Gholu Nandpur Kalor’s canine ‘Dolphin’ won Rs 21,000 and Neeta Kheri’s pet ‘Albaksh’ Rs 15,000, securing a spot among the top ten performers. Cash prizes were distributed for 4th to 10th positions, with the dog winning 10th place receiving Rs 2,100.
Kabaddi matches were held for 32 kg, 37 kg, 42 kg and 47 kg weight categories.
Tournament patron Rupinder Singh Roopa Sohana distributed 100 bicycles to outstanding players and top-performing raiders.
Baidwan Club president Rubal Sohana, Harjit Singh Bholu, Mahinder Singh, Minder Sohana and other officials supervised the tournament proceedings.
Besides club members, several dignitaries, including Hardev Singh Ubha from the BJP, Sushil Kumar Atri, Ashok Jha, and Baljinder Singh Balli, graced the event.
Meanwhile, club officials alleged that their tournament posters and banners were destroyed, calling it “a very shameful act”.
