Lalit Pandit says it was not good on Kumar Sanu’s part to not give Anand Bakshi and Jatin-Lalit the credit for ‘Tujhe Dekha To’

Lalit Pandit, who recently composed for Panchayat 3, opened up about feeling disheartened about Kumar Sanu not giving the composers and lyricist, Anand Bakshi, the credit for DDLJ's 'Tujhe Dekh To'.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) redefined romance in Indian cinema, blending traditional values with modern sensibilities. The film resonated deeply with both Indian and global audiences, becoming a cultural phenomenon. Its song “Tujhe Dekha To” holds an iconic status in Bollywood. Crooned by Lata Mangeshkar and Kumar Sanu, and composed by musical duo Jatin-Lalit, the track was a massive hit and still continues to strike a chord with Indians. Lalit Pandit, one half of the Jatin-Lalit duo, recently opened up about Sanu not acknowledging the composers and writers for the success of the song.

“The fact that Kumar Sanu didn’t acknowledge Anand Bakshi who penned the lyrics and us Jatin-Lalit who composed the music for Tujhe Dekha To, which became a success, was a little upsetting. It is not good on his part to continuously say, ‘Mera gaana hai, mera gaana hai (It is my song),'” Lalit told Bollywood Hungama.

Lalit Pandit stressed that a song doesn’t solely belong to the singer despite it becoming a hit and both lyricist and composers have a huge role to play. “Composers gaane ke kartha dharta hote hain. They decide who will be singing their song. It was Kumar Sanu’s career’s best song, so not giving credit to Anand Bakshi and us was not good,” he added.

The composer revealed that after “Tujhe Dekha To”, Kumar Sanu never collaborated with Yash Raj Films. “There were a few incidents that happened during the making of the song and they were unpleasant. DDLJ was the last film under Yash Raj banner for which Kumar Sanu sang. Yashji ne unko phir kabhi nahin gawaya. Kabhi kabhi galat baatein ho jatin hain,” he narrated.

Lalit Pandit, who recently composed for Panchayat 3 and collaborated with ’90s singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, revealed that despite the episode, he shared a good relationship with “Tumsa Koi Pyaara” singer. “We only fought while working. Kalesh to sabhi singer ke saath hote the jab hum gaana banate the (We used to have arguments with all singers while recording a song). Udit Narayan ke saath bhi huye hain (We fought with Udit Narayan, too). Udit is very hard working and despite our quarrels at work, he never forgot to give us the due credit,” he recalled.

Jatin-Lalit composed some of the most popular Hindi film albums of the 1990s including Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, Yes Boss, among many others but the brothers split in 2006. Fanaa, starring Aamir Khan and Kajol, was their last music album together.

In an earlier chat with Bollywood Hungama, Lalit said, “During Fanaa, we had split. Hum nahi karne vale the iske aage (We were not going to work together anymore). Aditya Chopra also knew. We told him.” The composer shared that it was “shocking” for the film industry but he was proud of the fact that they ended their journey on top. “Fanaa was that year’s best music,” he said.
