Nigerian musician and political activist Fela Kuti made one of the most profound statements about music when he said, “Music is a spiritual thing.” Somehow, the universality of music is what makes it the most personal too. One of the most stellar voices in Indian cinema music is National award-winner Rekha Bhardwaj who has regaled generations of audiences with her wonderful renditions of songs that seem to be standing the test of time. Even though her voice carries the power to guide many in their individual spiritual journeys, Rekha revealed what guided her in her journey.
In an interview with Shubhankar Mishra, Rekha opened up about what made her go on a spiritual journey, and how she found her master in Osho while embarking on this quest. “Yes, I was successful in love, life, and my career. But even then, I gravitated towards Osho. Didn’t Vinod Khanna, at the peak of his career, leave everything to go to Osho?” asked Rekha, who pointed out that the search for answers can happen even if there is nothing bad happening in our lives.
Responding to a question about what prompted her to take up this quest despite almost everything going well in her life, Rekha pointed out that she was amidst a lot of chaos in her mind. “I was known as Vishal Bhardwaj’s wife, and I wasn’t sure about my personal identity. There was a longing for music, and I reached that phase, but then, there is always something else that you are looking for, right?” asked Rekha, who pointed out how even the most perfect of sunsets can bring untold sadness in someone’s mind.
“Even when you have everything in life, and you are looking at the perfect sunset, and you are with your loved ones doing things that you love the most, there is a chance that sadness engulfs you. It can make you unhappy. So, there is something that affects you on a different level because no journey is the same,” said Rekha, adding that being part of the Osho school of meditation opened up her idea about life, and its embellishments. “I learnt what ego is, and how easy it is to hold in jealousy, and blame others for our own issues.”
Rekha candidly admitted that the chaos in her mind was a product of her own thoughts, and the more she understood about the self, the better she felt about herself. “You connect with yourself, and you enjoy life more despite everything that is happening around you. It taught me to deal with my own inner chaos. I learnt how confused i was, and I could come to terms with my hatred, my jealousy, etc…” said Rekha, who signed off from the topic by reflecting how her transformation as a human being also affected her music. “When you find peace in your journey, it will reflect in the music, and it is bound to touch other people too.”
