Imtiaz Ali reveals one change he will make to Kareena Kapoor’s Geet in Jab We Met: ‘Aur mazza aata’

Imtiaz Ali said that it would be fun to see Kareena Kapoor's Geet hurl sharper abuses in the popular phone scene in Jab We Met today, to the extent that it even shocks Shahid Kapoor's Aditya.

A question keeps chasing Imtiaz Ali: When will he make the sequel to his 2007 cult romantic comedy Jab We Met? The filmmaker has time and again clarified that he wouldn’t want to touch that film again, given its well-rounded ending. He turned heads when he said in an interview with SCREEN that he imagines the leads of that film — Geet (Kareena Kapoor) and Aditya (Shahid Kapoor) — would be at a divorce lawyer’s today.

In another interesting insight, Imtiaz talked about what he’d do differently if he made Jab We Met today. While referring to the popular scene in which Kareena’s character hurls abuses to her former crush on the phone, Imtiaz said on the Game Changers YouTube series, “Gaaliyan thodi tez ho sakti thi. Abuses would have been sharper. I would love to see Geet go and say really dirty gaalis. Aur mazza aata. Ekdum hi gandi wali baatein hoti hain na, unexpected. Aur agar aisa hota ki Shahid ka character Aditya, wo bhi shock ho jata ki yar ye toh mujhe bhi nahi aati itni gandi gaaliyan. Ye toh bahut hi low level hai. Toh aur mazza aata. (It would have been more fun if she would say the dirtiest stuff. And if Shahid’s character Aditya would get shocked that even he doesn’t know these low-level, dirty abuses, then it would have been even more fun).”

Jab We Met revolved around Geet, a dreamer, and Aditya, a realist, who meet on a train. She changes the way he looks at life. After Aditya finds out that Geet’s crush rejected her leading to her cutting away from her flights of fancy, he reunites with her to reignite her lost spark. Recently, when Shahid was asked to respond to Imtiaz’s guess that Geet and Aditya would be at a divorce lawyer’s today, Shahid told SCREEN, “That’s actually a fun idea that Geet and Aditya are now breaking up because they are frustrated with each other. Aditya is like, ‘She is her own favourite, who can ever put up with her?’”

Interestingly, Shahid and Kareena were dating when they shot for Jab We Met. However, they’d broken up by the time the film released in cinemas. Becoming a cult hit over the years, Shahid and Kareena were asked in 2016, at the trailer launch of their film Udta Punjab, whether they’d reunite for the sequel. While Shahid said the director has moved on from that idea, Kareena joked that the DVD of Jab We Met is always available.

The two actors were recently seen bonding at the IIFA Awards press conference in Jaipur. Later, Shahid claimed that him catching up with Kareena at a film event like that is “nothing new.
