Huma Qureshi’s parents were ‘convinced’ that her first film offer was a ‘prostitution racket’: ‘Why would somebody cast you?’

Huma Qureshi revealed that when she received her very first film offer, her parents didn’t believe it and thought it was part of something shady, so she had to convince them of its legitimacy.

Huma Qureshi, who made her debut with Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur in 2012, received widespread acclaim for her performance in the two-part crime saga. Her portrayal was so impressive that veteran filmmaker Govind Nihalani compared her to Smita Patil. However, Huma’s journey to films was far from easy. In fact, when she received her first ever offer, her parents feared that this could be nefarious.

She recounted this in a recent interview with Midday India and shared, “My parents didn’t believe it. They thought, why would somebody cast you? I think it’s the most audacious thing they had heard. They thought it was a prostitution racket; they were convinced.”

Reflecting further, she laughingly said, “Now, when I look back at them, I’m like, you really had no faith in my ability to gauge anything for myself. But yeah, it took a bit of convincing, and of course, my parents don’t come from this world. Even now, I don’t think they have too much understanding of the ways of the industry.”

Talking about her first offer, Huma shared, “I went to the office, I read the script, the next day they called me for a screen test, and by the same afternoon they told me that I’m in. However, the film never got made, so that was sad. When I went back home, I was fully convinced that I had a shot here if I moved cities, because maybe I’ve got what it takes. But then I had to convince my parents.” Huma later made her debut with Anurag’s film in 2012.

Huma Qureshi was recently seen in Season 4 of Maharani and played the role of a cop in the film Bayan, which was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). She also starred in Jolly LLB 3 and will appear as the antagonist in Netflix’s Delhi Crime 3, which premieres tomorrow.
