How Amitabh Bachchan found a home in Mehmood’s mansion for 2 years, would ride around in Anwar Ali’s Jaguar during struggle
Mehmood's brother Anwar Ali recalled the time when Amitabh Bachchan lived with them for two years and how he landed the lead part in Bombay to Goa.

In his early days in the Hindi film industry, Amitabh Bachchan got a lot of support from veteran actor Mehmood and in a recent chat, the late comedian’s brother Anwar Ali opened up about the time when Amitabh was welcomed into their large joint family as his sisters cared for Amitabh and fed him bhindi. Amitabh and Anwar were both a part of KA Abbas’ Saat Hindustani and lived with Mehmood for two years after the film released.
In a chat with The Times of India, Anwar shared that he and Amitabh lived on the first floor of Mehmood’s mansion where the senior actor lived on the third floor, and the other floors were occupied by the rest of the family members. “Amitabh was welcomed as one of the members of our fairly large joint family,” he shared and added that his sisters kept a “watchful” eye on them and cooked some of their favourite dishes, including bhindi for Amitabh Bachchan.
Anwar then shared that him and Amitabh would travel in his Jaguar XK120 as they met producers for work but sometimes would come back in a train as they would run out of fuel. He recalled that Amitabh bought his first car, a white Fiat soon after. He then traded it in for a Singer and later bought a Pontiac. “Somewhere in between, Bombay to Goa and Anand had happened,” he shared.
Anwar said that he wanted Amitabh to land the lead part in Bombay to Goa and to show off the actor’s dancing skills, he took him to Blow Up discotheque at Taj Mahal Hotel so Mehmood would sign him for the role. He added that it was his and Mehmood’s sister who nudged the senior actor to introduce Amitabh to NC Sippy, the producer of Anand “so he career could get a boost.”
For Amitabh, Anand was a turning point in his career as it brought him to the spotlight for the first time. Anand was also the start of his long collaborative relationship with director Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
Mehmood and Amitabh shared a warm relationship at the time but later, it went sour. Amitabh maintained a dignified silence about it but Mehmood made it known that he was quite upset with Amitabh. Mehmood passed away in 2004.
