E-rickshaw driver arrested after he attacks woman with knife, sexual assault suspected

The accused has been identified as Kannu Dayadham Naganshi (31), officers said. According to the police, a PCR call was received around 5 am on Saturday, to report that a woman was attacked with a knife and that her clothes were torn.

An e-rickshaw driver was arrested in North Delhi’s Majnu Ka Tila area after he allegedly attacked a woman with a knife on Saturday at his home where the police suspect he tried to sexually assault her.

The accused has been identified as Kannu Dayadham Naganshi (31), officers said. According to the police, a PCR call was received around 5 am on Saturday, to report that a woman was attacked with a knife and that her clothes were torn.

Upon reaching the spot, police officers found a woman lying unconscious with visible injuries on her head and face at the site of the incident. She was immediately shifted to the Trauma Center and was later referred to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital for further medical treatment.

Her statement is yet to be recorded, officers said, adding that her medical examination for sexual assault was conducted. Meanwhile, an FIR has been registered under sections of attempt to murder.

“Naganshi’s identity was established through tracking CCTV footage and local enquiry. He had earlier been arrested in 2013 in the Civil lines area in connection to a rape and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case”.

During questioning, the accused admitted that on Friday. he picked the woman from Vidhan Sabha Metro Station’s gate number 2 and took her to his house in an e-rickshaw.

“He made her drink alcohol and then allegedly assaulted her. When she resisted, he allegedly thrashed and threw her outside the house and fled from there. His version is corroborated by eyewitnesses at the Metro station and nearby local residents,” a police officer said.

The Crime and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) teams were called to the spot–where the woman was found–to carry out examinations.

A case under Section 109 (1) BNS, initially on the basis of the Daily Diary (DD) entry and the Medico-Legal Case (MLC) has been registered.
