Delhiites will be able to enjoy hot air balloon rides from Saturday at two Yamuna floodplain parks of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

A trial run of the first-ever tethered hot air balloon ride at Baansera Park was conducted by the DDA on Tuesday. Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena attended the event. An approximately 10-minute ride will cost Rs 3,000 plus taxes per person, Saxena said. According to the operator, the balloons will fly at a height of 100-150 feet, and permission has been obtained from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the balloons to go up to a height of 200 feet.

Rides will now be available at Baansera Park in Sarai Kale Khan and Asita East Park in Laxmi Nagar, with officials stating that based on the response, rides will also be introduced at Yamuna Sports Complex in Surajmal Vihar and Commonwealth Games Village Sports Complex.

The rides, initially to be conducted in the evening, may also be available during the day later, depending on public response. A DDA spokesperson said tethered flights will be permitted for four hours daily that may be extended if required.

According to the DDA, the initiative is part of its broader work on rejuvenating the Yamuna floodplains and creating new recreational spaces. The spokesperson said Asita, once encroached, has been developed into a landscaped green area, while Baansera — earlier a construction waste dump — has been converted into a bamboo-theme park with more than 30,000 bamboo plants, three water bodies and a musical fountain.

A ferry cruise will also be launched in the Yamuna early next year, according to officials.

Yamuna Sports Complex in Surajmal Vihar is the biggest sports complex developed by the DDA, while Commonwealth Games Sports Complex was developed for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
