No one can tame an angry Sunny Deol! The actor returns to the screens with his latest period-drama actioner, Gadar 2, the trailer of which dropped on Wednesday. The film is a sequel to the 2001 blockbuster Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, which featured Deol and Ameesha Patel. The duo reunites for Gadar 2, which has been directed by Anil Sharma, who had also helmed the original.

Gadar: Ek Prem Katha followed the story of Tara Singh (Deol), a Sikh, who falls in love with a Pakistani Muslim girl, Sakina (Patel). The sequel is set in Lahore during the year 1971 where Tara finds himself in the middle of ‘Crush India movement’ and travels to Pakistan yet again — this time to bring back his son Jeete, played by Utkarsh Sharma.

The trailer opens with scenes of protests in the streets of Pakistan, as an Indian soldier warns Tara Singh about the possibility of war with India. The trailer showcases Tara Singh fearlessly taking on Pakistani soldiers, declaring, “You don’t know who is Tara Singh, ask my enemies.” It then glimpses into Tara Singh and Sakina’s blissful married life as they dance to ‘Main Nikla Gaddi Leke’ with their son Jeete. However, Jeete is soon shown as a captive under the Pakistani army, enduring torture. In captivity, Jeete warns his captor that his father will come to Pakistan to rescue him and seek vengeance.

The trailer escalates into intense action as Tara Singh storms Pakistan to save his son. Tara and Jeete unite to fight the entire Pakistani army. The trailer’s tagline reads, “This Independence Day, he will fight for his family and the nation.” The trailer of Gadar 2 concludes with a nod to the iconic scene from the original film, where Tara Singh showcases his unparalleled strength by uprooting a hand pump to take on his enemies.

Gadar 2 was announced in 2021, with an initial release date of 2022. The film, which began its promotional campaign last month with a teaser, will release in theatres on August 11. It will see a box office clash with Akshay Kumar’s OMG2.

Though the Independence Day week will see two films clashing, it won’t be something new for Deol, who was part of Bollywood’s one of the most historic clashes in 2001 as his film released against Aamir Khan’s Lagaan. While the Aamir Khan film became a globally acclaimed hit, Gadar turned out to be one of the biggest blockbusters of Hindi cinema.
