Divyenndu says it is ‘stupid’ to ignore similar offers after breakout project like Mirzapur, but he is constantly conflicted: ‘Don’t know if it’s curse…’

Actor Divyendu talks about the battle between not wanting to repeat roles and reaping benefits of a success after breakouts like Mirzapur and Pyaar Ka Punchnama.

When an actor delivers a breakout performance, the industry is likely to offer them similar parts. It is a reality that actor Divyenndu has faced twice in his career with Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Mirzapur and says it is always an extremely tricky space to be in.

In 2011, Divyenndu burst into the scene as Liquid in Luv Ranjan’s buddy comedy Pyaar Ka Punchnama. Seven years later, he found himself playing another fan favourite part of Munna Bhaiya in Amazon Prime Video series Mirzapur.

In an interview with Indianexpress.com, the actor said the “lures” to follow a pattern after a success were “always there”. “Even after my first film Pyaar ka Punchnama, people were like, ‘Please keep doing comedies!’ But I didn’t want to do stuff that isn’t resonating with me.”

Divyenndu equates creating an image to that of digging a new well and says the fight in his head would always be to wonder if it is a wise choice to dig a new well every time. “I’d have this conversation with myself, that it is me who dug this well, so I might as well draw water from it. It is stupid to then say, I have dug this well so now I will move on.”

A project which may not necessarily be high on an original character, sometimes comes loaded with a good pay cheque, but Divyendu says there is no “materialistic bone” in his body and hence his film choices have not been dictated by commerce.

“But yes it is true, once you do a (memorable) character and similar offers come to you, it is stupid also to not do it. It is a photocopy of your original at the end of the day. It is a dichotomy, you feel like punching yourself and saying, ‘Kar lena yaar, why are you thinking so much about it.’ I mean, who is looking at you and saying, ‘There is this one actor who is not repeating himself.’ Something does stop you. So I don’t know if it is a curse or a boon,” he added.

Divyendu recently starred in the four-part Netflix series The Railway Men, which was Yash Raj Films’ OTT debut. Meanwhile third season of Mirzapur 3, starring Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, Isha Talwar among others, is currently in post-production.
