Actor Dilip Joshi is a household name today, courtesy the longest-running sitcom on Indian TV, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC). But before people came to love his TMKOC character Jethalal, Joshi starred in several Bollywood films, including the superhit Hum Aapke Hain Koun. The actor thought there would be no looking back for him after the film became a blockbuster, but nothing of that sort happened. He didn’t get any work after the Salman Khan-Madhuri Dixit starrer for a long time.

Recently, Joshi shared how Hum Aapke Hain Koun came to him at a time when he was in need of money. “In 1992, my daughter Niyati was born. At the time I had Rs 25,000 in my bank account, out of which 13-14k went as hospital bills. I was doing only a play at the time, through which I used to earn Rs 400-450 from one show. At that time, I got Hum Aapke Hain Koun. I thought now my life is set. But that film came, it became a super hit and I didn’t get any work after that,” Joshi shared during the latest episode of The Bombay Journey.

However, a few years later, Dilip Joshi was offered One 2 Ka 4, headlined by Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla. On the first day of his shoot for the movie, the film’s producer Nazir Ahmed asked him to not get scared as he had to shoot a scene with SRK. But Joshi was amused at the advice of his producer.

The actor narrated, “On the first day of the shoot, producer Nazir Sahab came and told me, ‘Darna nahi aap, Shah Rukh Khan ke saath aapka scene hai (Don’t be scared, you have a scene with Shah Rukh Khan). I was like, ‘Why would I be scared, he is an artiste, I am an artiste, it’s all fine.’”

Joshi also revealed how he enjoyed working with Shah Rukh Khan since he was so ‘cooperative’ and left room for improvisation. He shared that since Shah Rukh came from a theatre background, he would rehearse a scene before giving the final shot. During the rehearsal, Joshi improvised his scene and waited for SRK’s reaction. “He looked at me and smiled. I was confused if he liked it or not. He told me to do the reading of the script again with him. Then, I didn’t improvise,” the actor shared. But to his surprise, Shah Rukh liked the improvised version and asked Joshi to keep it.

“Shah Rukh is so cooperative that I enjoyed working with him,” Joshi said during the interview.

Not just Shah Rukh Khan, but even Salman Khan respected Dilip Joshi’s talent. On the sets of Maine Pyar Kiya, which was Joshi’s debut Bollywood film, Salman would ask Joshi if the shot was fine or if it could be made better.

“Maine Pyar Kiya was my first film, it had Laxmikant Berde, and Reema Lagoo, I had a very small role. I would mostly sit at the side. But, when Salman got to know that I am from theatre, he would sometimes ask me, ‘Ye shot theek hua, ye theek tha? (Was this shot fine, did this happen correctly?)’ There was so much discipline on the set. I enjoyed it a lot,” Joshi shared.

Dilip Joshi hasn’t taken up any film since Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. The show airs on Sony SAB.
