David and Amitabh worked together in the 1990s hit Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. Amitabh, who was known for signing films with a bound script, started working with David, a director who would write the dialogues on the set.
David, in a chat with Bollywood Bubble, recalled that he would fold a paper in half with Amitabh’s dialogue on one side and ask him to read from it. “Bachchan saab would tell me… I would give him the line on a folded paper. He would say show me the rest. I would tell him this is yours, this is all you have to say (laughs). We had a great time.”
He also spoke about late director Manmohan Desai, whom he considered as his “mentor.” Desai was known for making films like Coolie, Amar Akbar Anthony among others. “He used to sell dreams. The best thing about him would be… he used to believe what he used to do,” he shared.
David said that Manmohan once shared with him, “There was a scene in Amar Akbar Anthony where three sons are giving blood to their mother. Amit ji and Chintu (Rishi Kapoor) said ‘What are you doing Manmohan? How can this happen?’ He said, ‘Chintu, when the film releases, people will clap on this’. He said ‘you should believe it first, only then people will believe it’.”
David said that he worked under Manmohan Desai for a few films and eventually branched out on his own. He recalled taking his sons Rohit and Varun to Desai to get his blessings.
