Rajinikanth’s Kabali managed to break many records, including those of Baahubali. As Baahubali 2 release date is announced, these are the lessons its makers are learning from the Rajinikanth film.
Baahubali: The Beginning was a box office phenomenon. The SS Rajamouli film earned Rs 600 crore at the box office, out of which Rs 100 crore were from the dubbed Hindi version. As Karan Johar announced Baahubali 2’s release date, or as it has been named Baahubali: The Conclusion, it is taking some marketing lessons from another box office juggernaut, Rajinikanth’s Kabali.
Speaking to Firstpost, Baahubali’s producer Shobu said they will be doing a lot of tie-ups. “We were very impressed the way producer Kalaipuli Thanu marketed Rajinikanth’s Kabali. In fact we have already started the theatrical and other rights sales of the film,” the producer told the website. Baahubali 2 will release on 28 April, 2017.
Kabali reportedly earned Rs 200 crore from the pre-sale of rights such as satellite and music rights. So when the film made at a cost of about Rs 75 crore released, it had already earned profit! Tha Rajinikanth movie has allegedly made over Rs 650 crore including the money earned from sale of rights.
The budget of Baahubali is much larger. In fact, reports say the climax itself is being shot at the cost of Rs 300 crore. However, the sale of the rights will ensure the film recovers its cost.
The film has already sold its international rights for over Rs 50 crore. The Tamil Nadu rights are also supposed to have brought in a record amount. The north India, Karnataka and Kerala rights are yet to be sold. It seems we should be prepared with another record-breaking spree.
SS Rajamoui’s Baahubali broke many records in 2015 and that is not just only in terms of box office. It entered the Guinness Book of Records for having the largest poster for a film, the trailer had the highest number of views and even before grabbing the national award in 2016, it became the first southern film from India to gross over Rs 600 crore worldwide. The previous cast members of the film will be seen the sequel — Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Sathyaraj, Anushka Shetty and Ramya Krishnan.
