Actor Amitabh Bachchan is the son of renowned poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan. His parents had an inter-caste marriage in 1942, and poet and political activist Sarojini Naidu supported the late poet when everyone opposed the wedding.

In the latest episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 15, senior Bachchan talked about Naidu’s personality after a contestant on the show answered a question about her. He shared that Naidu was a “big fan” of his late father Harivansh Rai.

“I am a little hesitant to say this, but she was also a big fan of my babuji (father). My babuji had an intercaste marriage. My mom Teji ji was from a Sikh family. At the time, we lived in Allahabad, and getting married in a different caste was labelled a sin in that region,” shared Big B.

He added that Naidu was the first one to ‘console’ his father and even introduced him to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. “She even introduced him to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who lived in Anand Bhavan in Allahabad. I still remember the way she had introduced my father. She said, ‘Meet the poet and his poetry’.” shared Amitabh Bachchan.

Story behind Amitabh Bachchan’s surname

During KBC 13, the Sholay star also mentioned the story behind his surname ‘Bachchan’. He said, “My father deliberately gave us the name Bachchan, because the surname indicates caste. When I was about to get admitted to school, I was asked about my surname. Father and mother decided right then they wouldn’t give the surname of a caste, but would rather be the pseudonym of my father, his poet name, the name he used to write poems. It was to hide indication of my caste.”

Besides Kaun Banega Crorepati, Amitabh Bachchan has Vikas Bahl’s action thriller Ganapath, featuring Tiger Shroff in the lead role, and Nag Ashwin’s film Kalki 2898 AD in the pipeline.
