Business tycoon and philanthropist Ratan Tata’s passing on October 9 left an indelible mark on Indians across the country. Recently, megastar Amitabh Bachchan took a moment on his show Kaun Banega Crorepati 16 to remember Tata and share a memorable experience with the iconic businessman. In the latest promo for the show, featuring guests Boman Irani and Farah Khan, Bachchan is seen recalling a trip to London with Ratan Tata, during which the business tycoon borrowed some money from him to make a phone call.

Amitabh reminisced, saying, “Kya aadmi the main bata nahi sakta (What a man he was). Such a simple human being.” He recounted how they both happened to be traveling to London on the same flight. Upon landing at Heathrow Airport, Ratan Tata found himself in an unexpected situation when his arranged pick-up left him. “Once, we both happened to be on the same flight. We landed at Heathrow Airport, and the people who were supposed to pick him up must have left by then. I saw him standing there, and he went to a phone booth to make a call,” Bachchan narrated.

The simplicity and humility of Ratan Tata became evident to Bachchan when he approached him for help. “A short while later, he came up to me and asked, ‘Amitabh, can I borrow some money from you? I don’t have money to make a phone call!’” Bachchan shared. This touching moment, showcasing Tata’s humble nature, became an unforgettable memory for the actor.

Big B shared another story during the episode, recalling how a friend once attended an event with Ratan Tata, who then asked him for a ride home. Big B recounted, “Ratan Tata told my friend, ‘Can you drop me home? I just live behind your house.’ Ratan Tata saying, ‘I don’t have a car’—can you imagine that? It’s unbelievable.”

Interestingly, Ratan Tata and Amitabh Bachchan have collaborated in the past. Tata’s production company, Tata Infomedia Ltd, funded the Amitabh-starrer Aetbaar. However, the film struggled at the box office, and according to a report by Rediff, the Tata group faced a loss of around Rs 3.5 crore on the project, leading to their decision to exit the movie business.

Ratan Tata’s funeral was held in Mumbai on October 11, 2024, with several high-profile attendees, including Sachin Tendulkar, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Amit Shah, Mukesh Ambani and others. Numerous Bollywood actors and other public figures mourned his demise, sharing tributes on social media.

Amitabh Bachchan also shared his condolences, expressing his sorrow on X (formerly Twitter), where he wrote, “Just came to learn of the passing of Shri Ratan Tata .. was working very late .. An era has ended .. a most respected , humble yet visionary leader of immense foresight and resolve .. Spent some wonderful moments with him, during several Campaigns we were involved in together ..My prayers.”
