NIRF Top universities in India: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 has been released by the Ministry of Education. This time, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has topped in the universities category. The second position is obtained by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) New Delhi and the third spot has been secured by Jamia Millia Islamia respectively. Interestingly, the three varsities have continued their dominance from last year and have retained the same spot.
IISc has held the top spot for the last three years.
This time, the fourth spot has seen a change from Jadavpur University to Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal. MAHE is followed by BHU Varanasi at the fifth spot.

Delhi University has improved its rank from 11th to sixth this year, which is followed by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham which has retained its seventh spot from last year. Aligarh Muslim University has improved its rank from ninth to eighth this year, and the ninth rank has been awarded to Jadavpur University — a decline from the fourth spot from last year. Vellore Institute of Technology also fell from eighth spot to tenth spot this year.
NIRF 2023 had three non-government varsities including Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, and Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal were on the list in 2022. However, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore had made its entry at 8th spot.
In 2022 too, IISc Bengaluru topped the university rankings with a score of 83.57, followed by Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (68.47 score) and Jamia Millia Islamia ( 65.91 score) at the second and third spot respectively. Jamia Millia Islamia improved its rankings dramatically as it jumped from rank 6 in 2021 to rank 3 in 2022 by replacing Banaras Hindu University (which slipped to rank 6).
In fact, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham ranked fifth with a score of 63.40 in 2022, followed by BHU, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal at the seventh spot with a score of 62.84.
