According to media reports and local updates, multiple districts have already issued notifications for temporary closures.
Later this month, schools nationwide will also observe Christmas Eve on 24 December, followed by the holiday on 25 December. Many institutions are expected to close on 31 December as well, often clubbing the day with cultural events, annual functions or academic scheduling adjustments.
Between 8 and 14 December, several states are implementing short or week-long closures due to weather disruptions, administrative requirements, and staff protests. According to media reports, heavy rainfall, a major teachers’ strike, local elections, and a deepening cold wave are shaping holiday schedules across regions.
Schools in the winter zones of Jammu & Kashmir will remain closed from 8 to 14 December as temperatures plunge and early snowfall affects daily movement. Dense fog and icy conditions have made commuting unsafe, prompting authorities to order a week-long break.
The administration has also issued the full winter vacation schedule for the season:
Pre-primary: 26 November 2025 – 28 February 2026
Classes 1–8: 1 December 2025 – 28 February 2026
Classes 9–12: 11 December 2025 – 22 February 2026
Parents and teachers have welcomed the decision, citing student safety amid harsh weather.
As per local media reports, continuous moderate to heavy rainfall associated with Cyclone Ditwah has led to school closures in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh from 8 to 13 December.
District authorities have advised families to stay connected with local schools for day-to-day updates, as rainfall patterns may affect additional scheduling.
According to media reports, Kerala will keep all schools shut on 9 and 11 December to facilitate local body elections and related arrangements. Both government and private institutions will be used as polling stations.
In Maharashtra, widespread school closures are expected in the Marathwada region due to an ongoing teachers’ and staff strike over mandatory TET. As per local and regional media reports, several schools will remain shut through the week as protests continue ahead of the Class 10 board exam cycle. Schools in Mumbai, however, are largely expected to function normally.
With varied reasons driving closures across states, families are advised to follow updates from district administrations and individual schools for accurate daily announcements.
