There are a total of 16 states which house both IITs and IIMs, even though they may not be in the same city. Here's the list

There are a total of 21 IIMs and 23 IITs in the country, located in different cities. The most recent IIT, i.e. the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Goa was founded in 2016 and the most recent IIM is the Indian Institute of Management, Mumbai (IIM-M) which got the label of an ‘IIM’ in 2023.

While there are IITs and IIMs in several cities around the country, there are a total of three cities that house an IIT and an IIM together.

Indore

Located in Madhya Pradesh, Indore is the largest and most populous city in the state. The city is also considered the state education hub as it houses campuses of both IIT Indore and IIM Indore.

IIM Indore (IIM-I) was founded in 1996 and is the sixth IIM to be established. Its first MBA (PGP) batch consisting of 37 participants commenced in June 1998. It was crowned with the title of ‘Institute of National Importance’ in 2017 along with the other IIMs. At present, Dr Himanshu Rai is the director of the institute, who took charge in January 2019.

IIM-I is ranked at the eight position in the list of top management schools in the country, as per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023.

IIT Indore (IIT-I) was founded in 2009 and is one of the eight new IITs, established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India under The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011. IIT Indore is officially recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the Union government. In the overall NIRF rankings 2023, the institute appeared at the 28th spot. Internationally, the IIT Indore was ranked 396 in the QS World University Rankings of 2023 and 185 in Asia. It was ranked 601–800 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2023, 87 in Asia in 2022 and 84 among emerging economies

Jammu

Jammu hosts both IIM and IIT — both of which were founded in 2016. With an NIRF Ranking (management category) of 41 in 2023, IIM Jammu is the youngest Indian Institute of Management. The current director is B. S. Sahay, and the student intake was 240 for the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) programme for the year 2019.

Established in the same year, IIT Jammu is headed by Prof Manoj Singh Gaur. The academic programme at IIT Jammu followed the curriculum of IIT Delhi till the 2018 batch, and all batches admitted to BTech programme in 2019 and onward follow the IIT Jammu curriculum. As per NIRF Engineering College rankings in 2023, IIT Jammu was ranked at 67 in the ‘Engineering’ category.

Mumbai

IIM Mumbai, previously recognised as the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai (NITIE Mumbai), was established in 1963, but it was in 2023 that the institute was converted into an IIM. In 2007, noted industrialist Anand Mahindra and HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh suggested the change in the name of NITIE to an IIM, Mumbai. While the decision has been pending since then, the Union Cabinet approved the amendment in the IIM Act on July 12, 2023, designating NITIE Mumbai as the 21st IIM and renaming it as IIM Mumbai. IIM Mumbai is ranked 7th among management schools in India by the NIRF in 2023.

On the other hand, IIT Bombay was one of the first IITs to be established as it was founded in 1958. Planning began in 1957 and the first batch of 100 students was admitted in 1958. It was the second ever IIT to be established, with assistance from UNESCO and with funds contributed by the Soviet Union. Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone of the permanent campus at Powai on 10 March 1959. The Parliament decreed it an Institute of National Importance in 1961, and it was conferred the status of Institute of Eminence by the government on July 9, 2018.

IIT Bombay ranked at the third spot in the engineering category of NIRF rankings 2023, and fourth in the overall category. Interestingly, the institute ranked 10th in the management category.

Other than these three, there are a total of 16 states that house both IITs and IIMs, even though they may not be in the same city. These states are:

  9. Bihar: IIT Patna- IIM Bodh Gaya
