The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar on June 21 released a new BTech course in artificial intelligence. There are some subjects the course has in common with BTech Computer Science, but the majority of courses are different.

A similar course is also offered by IIT Patna and IIT Guwahati. If studying artificial intelligence and machine learning resonate with you, this might be the right programme for you. Here’s a brief on course structure, eligibility criteria and curriculum.

BTech in Artificial Intelligence: Curriculum

The curriculum includes core AI and Machine Learning courses that strengthen the basics. Beyond this, students can pick specialised courses (through basket electives) in the various branches of AI, in advanced AI topics (e.g. computer vision, natural language processing, etc). and in general CSE areas (e.g. if someone wants to specialise in hardware for AI).

The specialisations of AI are multidisciplinary. These specialisations can be applied, as well as in core areas of AI like Bayesian AI. For example: students can specialise in AI for life sciences, AI for mechanical engineering/robotics, AI for earth/ climate science or in developing new AI algorithms itself. This is reflected in the set of electives that the students can take.  Students have to take electives from the basket of “Advanced AI” as well as from ” AI clusters” (applications).

BTech in Artificial Intelligence: Course structure

It is a four-year full-time undergraduate degree programme divided into eight semesters. Candidates will have to study 6 to 7 subjects and elective options each semester.

BTech in Artificial Intelligence: Eligibility criteria

Admission to all the programmes will be done on the basis of JEE Advanced score. Additionally, candidates must have completed class 12 (or equivalent) examination from any recognised state or central board.

There are a small number of supernumerary seats for entry via National/international science Olympiads.
