An anti-encroachment drive carried out by the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Saturday turned tense in Sector 22 after a group of women allegedly attacked municipal labourers engaged in removing unauthorised structures.
Following this, the MC officials immediately sought police intervention, and a formal complaint was lodged with the Sector 22 police chowki in-charge.
An MC official said that despite the incident, the enforcement drive continued at several key locations across the city, including Sector 22 near Kiran Cinema and Shastri Market, Sector 15, the Rock Garden area and Sukhna Lake. A total of 47 challans were issued to violators found illegally occupying public spaces.
The MC officials said the drive was aimed at clearing footpaths and public areas to ensure smooth pedestrian movement and to maintain the city’s planned layout and aesthetic appeal.
The enforcement teams, accompanied by police personnel, removed temporary encroachments and issued challans to vendors and others found violating municipal norms.
According to MC officials, the situation in Sector 22 escalated when municipal workers were removing encroachments, leading to an alleged attack by a group of women.
No serious injuries were reported, but the incident prompted officials to call the police to maintain order.
An MC official said that “encroachments cause inconvenience to the public and affect safety. The Municipal Corporation will continue to conduct such drives regularly”.
