“God chooses the greatest heroes from the darkest places”— this is exactly how SSLC topper from Karnataka Anupama Hireholi described her academic success. Hailing from Belagavi district, Hireholi is one of the four toppers in Karnataka who scored 625/625 in the SSLC board examination.

The 16-year-old lost her father in 2021 when she was studying in Class 9. A student of Sri Kumareshwar High School, Hireholi wanted to give up studies and take up a job to support her family. However, it was her mother Rajashree who backed her to continue studying and pursue her dreams. In fact, Hireholi also threw up a challenge with her class teacher Basu Madiwalar promising that she would end up scoring in flying colours.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Hireholi said, “If not for the support from my mother and teachers, I would have ended up in a job right now. I had made up my mind to quit studies and join work to support my family, after my father’s death. However, my well-wishers advised me against the decision. I then posed a challenge to my class teacher that I would score 100 per cent. My class teacher displayed the promise made by each student on the board. I used to see that every morning and work harder.”

Hireholi aspires to become a civil servant (IAS) and help orphans in the district through social service. In fact, she is also a state level chess player. “Chess helped to a great extent in achieving this feat. It helped me avoid diverting my mind and boosted my concentration,” said Hireholi.

The Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board announced the SSLC board exam results Monday, wherein the state recorded a pass percentage of 83 per cent. The examination was conducted from March 31 to April 15 across 3305 examination centres. A total of 835102 students appeared, 700619 students passed and over 7000 students were absent.

Bhoomika Pai

“Even if relatives visited our house, Bhoomika never used to come out of her study room,” says Ramesh Pai, father of Karnataka’s SSLC topper Bhoomika Pai who studied almost over 12 hours a day to achieve the academic feat. Fifteen-year-old Pai is a native of Udupi and studied at New Macaulay English School, Hosur Road.

Pai aspires to be an astronaut but, is taking it only one step at a time. Speaking to The Indian Express, Pai said, “I love to explore space and I want to become an astronaut. However, I have currently enrolled in a college to pursue computer science.”

She looks up to her parents and teachers who have been her support system throughout her preparations for the examination. “I just practised what my teachers taught me. I referred to previous year’s question papers and other model papers to practise. Although I would start my day at 6 am and study, I extensively studied late night till 1 am,” said Pai, who is a taluk level throwball player and a dancer.

Yashas Gowda

Yashas Gowda, another SSLC topper hails from Chikkaballapura. As simple as it sounds, Gowda followed a simple success mantra throughout the academic year – to study from day one.

Gowda is exploring his options to become an entrepreneur in the field of health or IT. However, it all depends on the specialisation he chooses in his higher studies, he says. “I used to study every day for only two hours. Those two hours I used to study with utmost focus. I also practised previous years’ question papers and model question papers and some guidance from experts in schools helped me to score well.”

He is also a district-level throwball player. His advice to other candidates appearing for the examination is to possess good ‘time management’ skills.
