Vice President C P Radhakrishnan Saturday led parliamentarians in paying tributes to those who lost their lives while foiling the December 13, 2001 terrorist attack on the Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Radhakrishnan, who is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, were among the first to offer floral tributes.
The annual commemorative ceremony was held outside the old Parliament building, now known as the Samvidhan Sadan, news agency PTI reported. Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel presented a guard of honour, followed by a minute of silence.
Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with Union ministers Kiren Rijiju, Jitendra Singh and Arjun Ram Meghwal, were present at the event.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla did not attend the ceremony as he is in Latur to attend the funeral of former Lok Sabha Speaker and ex-Union minister Shivraj Patil, who passed away on Friday.
The 2001 attack was carried out by five armed terrorists, who were neutralised by personnel of the then Parliament Security Service, the CRPF and the Delhi Police before they could enter the building. Six Delhi Police personnel, two Parliament Security Service staff, a gardener and a television cameraman were killed in the attack.
