The National Institute of Technology Meghalaya (NIT Meghalaya) is one of the various NITs established under the NIT Act of India. Despite being established in 2007, the Institute has never ranked in the top 20 or 40 of the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF). In the NIRF rankings 2024, NIT Meghalaya could rank only under the engineering category.
Last year, it had a rank of 72 which in 2024, improved to 68 in the NIRF 2024 engineering rankings. The Institute scored 49.82 in the Indian Rankings 2024.
The institution failed to rank in other categories – research, overall, innovation, or architecture in NIRF 2024. Moreover, it lagged in establishing a global presence and did not appear in the Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking 2024 or the QS World University Rankings.

In 2024, the Institute’s teaching, learning, and resources (TLR) score is 71.91, followed by research and professional practice (RPC) at 32.09, graduation outcomes (GO) at 60.88, outreach and inclusivity (OI) at 60.89, and perception (PR) 3.49, all out of 100. Last year, in the NIRF rankings, the Meghalaya-based institute secured a 67.55 score in TLR out of 100, 20.62 in RPC out of 100, 53.37 in GO out of 100, 61.24 in OI out of 100, and 3.79 in PR out of 100 under engineering category 2023.
In 2022 and 2023, NIT Meghalaya was ranked at 60 and 72 respectively. One factor in NIT Meghalaya’s decline in rank from 60 in NIRF 2022 to 72 in 2023 is the lower scores received in OI and GO categories in the NIRF 2023 engineering ranking, however in 2024, the OI scores reduced by a point and GO scores increased to 60.88 from 53.37 in 2023.
The educational institution offers five courses in BTech and Mtech disciplines such as computer science and engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electronic and communication engineering and electrical engineering. At the same time, the MSc programme offered is in three streams – science, physics and, mathematics.
Candidates can even obtain their doctoral degree from NIT Meghalaya (PhD) in various engineering, basic science, and humanities and social science programmes.
