The number of Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) candidates registering for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced has doubled from last year, thanks to the one-time relaxation from the JEE-Main enjoyed by these candidates, after their status of foreign nationals was withdrawn in March 2023.
Bishnupada Mandal, Chairman for the JEE Advanced 2023, told The Indian Express, “The OCI/PIO candidates did not have to appear for the JEE Main this year to qualify for the JEE Advanced. It is because they were considered as foreign nationals initially and so they could directly register for JEE Advanced. But this is only a one-time pass.”
As per the initially released information brochure of the JEE Advanced; the OCI/ PIO candidates were declared as foreign nationals. After redefining OCI/PIO candidates as foreign nationals last year, the Joint Admission Board (JAB), 2023 had taken the decision to exclude them from the JEE Main. They could directly register for the JEE Advanced, like other foreign nationals.
However, in March 2023, a revised JEE Advanced brochure was released along with a statement regarding OCI/PIO candidates. Citing a judgement by the Supreme Court in February 2023, in a case related to OCI/PIO candidates, the statement read, “The effect of the judgment has been considered by the JAB 2023 in its emergency meeting held on March 06, 2023. Accordingly, certain changes have been made to the Information Brochure for JEE Advanced 2023. The eligibility conditions for the OCI/PIO candidates shall remain the same as earlier announced, i.e. they will be eligible to appear directly for JEE Advanced 2023 without appearing in JEE Main 2023. This measure shall be applicable only for the year 2023.”
As the decision to withdraw their status of foreign nationals was taken after first of the two sessions of the JEE Main was already completed; the JAB 2023 decided to continues with the relaxation for this year. However, it is most likely to be removed from next year. The traditional system of qualifying for JEE Advanced after the JEE Main is expected to resume next year for the OCI/PIO candidates.
