Established in 1959, with technical and academic assistance from the Government of Germany, it is located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
It is the third IIT to be established in India, following IIT Kharagpur and IIT Bombay. It has consistently ranked as the top engineering institute in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for several years. Now, let’s see the breakup of IIT Madras’s NIRFs rankings.

Even under the management category, IIT Madras has maintained the ranking spot and has remained under the top 20 institutes of the country. In the QS World University Rankings 2025, the Chennai-based institute ranked 227. Additionally, for the QS under Asian University Rankings 2025, particularly for southern Asia, it ranked three.
On the other hand for the Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings 2020, it ranked in bandwidth of 601–800.
