IIT-Madras and University of Leeds launch Joint Centre of Excellence in Sustainability

The collaboration between the University of Leeds and IIT Madras will facilitate idea, researches and innovation to tackle the sustainable development goals.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Leeds to launch the Joint Virtual Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Development (VCoE-SD).

According to Prof. Vasilis Sarhosis, University of Leeds, the agreement will develop a self-sustaining network of high-quality staff, finding opportunities and encouraging impactful research and innovation to overcome sustainable development goals.

 The MoU will facilitate better collaborative research projects between the IIT Madras and University of Leeds and even join academic activities such as new courses, conferences, seminars, symposia, and lectures.

“As a first initiative, a virtual collaborative group on various topics on sustainability is established. These faculty led activities are expected to result in significant researcher mobility, joint Doctoral, Masters programs and active participation in bi-lateral and multilateral funding opportunities for research and development”, said  Dr. Satyanarayanan Seshadri Advisor, Global Partnership at the Office of Global Engagement, Head, The Energy Consortium, IIT Madras.

Additionally, it will enable a platform to exchange teaching skills and personnel, student placement opportunities, and even publication and other material being shared amongest each other.

The agreement will enhance knowledge and innovation in various critical fields, leading to the development of research and innovation towards global challenges.

As the University of Leeds celebrates 25 years of engagement in India, this MoU highlights the enduring commitment to fostering academic excellence and driving progress that benefits both our nations and the world at large.”
