Amidst questions over the adoption of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) in different parts of north-east India, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma Monday said students seeking admissions to state government aided and private colleges are likely to be exempted from the admission test for entry into undergraduate programmes. "They (centre) have agreed that there would be certain areas where they would try to exempt some of our colleges which aren't centrally funded.. Those (students) would not have to appear in the entrance exam", Sangma said in a statement. The Chief Minister met union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi yesterday. However, he said the official communication on the issue was still awaited from the centre. As per the new central guidelines, CUET scores were made mandatory for entry in undergraduate programmes in 45 central universities for the current academic year. While union education minister Pradhan reasoned in April that CUET doesn't curtail the rights of state and Union Territories, there has been stiff opposition from Tamil Nadu, where the state assembly passed a resolution against CUET. In Meghalaya, Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) said grievances against the entrance test were true and demanded the government to pay heed to reject CUET. Student bodies at Agartala voiced protest against CUET and sought to roll in back.
