A cop saved the life of an elderly person who allegedly jumped into the Tapi river in Surat city Monday. The senior citizen is a former diamond trader.
As per the police, a passerby spotted the man jumping from the weir-cum-causeway at Singhanpore and called up the Surat police control room.
A PCR van patrolling the Chowk Bazaar area was informed about the incident and drove to the spot in under seven minutes, Chowk Bazaar police inspector MB Asura said.
PCR van driver and police constable Chintan Rajyaguru, 30, spotted the elderly man drowning and jumped into the river to rescue him. The man was pulled out of the river and water was pumped out from his chest. The former trader was later taken to the New Civil hospital for treatment and he is now out of danger.
Talking to the Indian Express, Rajyaguru said: “This is for the first time in my life that I have saved someone’s life. I hail from Bhavnagar and learned to swim at an early age. After reaching Singhanpore, I saw no attempts were being made by anybody to save the man. It would have been too late if we had waited for divers and fire department personnel to arrive. It was my duty to save his life and I feel satisfied for having done it.”
Asura said, “We are proud of Chintan Rajyaguru, who put his life in danger to save the life of an elderly person. We have also intimated the incident to top police officials. We will write to the government and request it to give Chintan Rajyaguru a bravery medal.”
Meanwhile, the police are trying to ascertain the reason behind the suicide attempt.
