Prices of several essential commodities have fallen in the last month, with the reduction in prices of vegetables and pulses. Pulses traders said the increased supply of tur dal had ensured a drop in prices.
At the Agriculture Product Market Committee (APMC),tur dal is priced at Rs 55 per kg. Increased demand for tur dal has reduced demand for other pulses as well. Last year,at the peak of price rise, tur dal had crossed Rs 85 per kg at the APMC.
Similarly, prices of vegetables are also much less than what they were two months ago.
Prices of most vegetables are within Rs 10 per kg on the wholesale market. Potatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots and onions are available at Rs 6- 10. Consumers can buy leafy vegetables at less than Rs 5 per bunch, said an APMC vegetable trader.
In the retail market, the prices will be 40 per cent higher. Traders say prices have come down now because they are in greater supply.
The new season for certain commodities like the onions will start this month. Currently it is selling at Rs 9 per kg,lower than two months ago,but still high when compared to last year. While last year it was only Rs 5 per kg,it is Rs 9 per kg,but it is still lower than two months ago, when the prices of onions were close to Rs 20 at the wholesale market.
Prices of lemons have also increased marginally in the wholesale market.
The price of sugar has not reduced significantly – in the retail market,it is priced at Rs 35 per kg. District Collectorate officials said supply of sugar has been maintained at the PDS.
