The Pune city police on Saturday bid farewell to outgoing state Director General of Police Ajit Parasnis at a programme where police officers from all ranks praised the top police boss, who, they said, would be remembered as an “outstanding human being” and for his contribution to police welfare.

Parasnis (60),a 1976-batch IPS officer, was born in a family of police officer Vasant Parasnis, served in Pune as an assistant commissioner of police (ACP) and did his studies in English literature from Ferguson College. “Receiving the farewell in the city where I grew up and spent my college days and where my father served as a police officer, has a special significance and I feel it is a great honour,” said Parasnis. Before he joined the police services,Parasnis had worked as a lecturer at a college in Talegaon.

Commissioner Meeran Borwankar, state CID chief Ashok Dhiware and other senior officers were present on the dais. Borwankar said the most important thing that one could learn from Parasnis was his sensitivity towards gender issues. She also spoke about his initiatives and contribution in police welfare schemes.

Dhiware said,“It is a matter of great pride that a son of a police officer has reached the highest position in Maharashtra police and is receiving farewell from the police of the city he loves.” Dhiware added,“More than anything of this,I feel if we look at him as a human being beyond his role as a police officer, there are many more things to learn from him.”

Parasnis said,“There is a leadership crisis in police, from police station level to district headquarters. Officers must take initiatives and set examples.”

Box of sweets from friend

Ashok Bonagir,a friend of Parasnis since his college days, said,”There was not a single person in our college who did not know the name Ajit Parasnis. I still remember how we spent time together watching movies, listening records of songs and relaxing with a cup of tea.” Bonagir gifted Parasnis a box of specially prepared sweets.
