The Photo Op

Interesting, sensational and newsworthy pictures by the city's photo journalists are on display at the Pune Patrakar Sangh.

Their lens captures news that the morning papers and magazines are made of. The keen eye of the city’s photo-journalist hardly misses a news-worthy picture. These photographers travel the length and breadth of the city to capture events and personalities – shots that add visual strength to the paper. The photographers’ association under the Pune Patrakar Sangh,is showcasing some of the pictures shot by photo journalists from different media houses at their annual photo exhibition at the Pune Patrakar Sangh premises.

In its ninth year now,the exhibition has over 125 photographs from the city’s best photo journalists. It was formally inaugurated by Dnyaneshwar Mulay,India’s high commissioner to Maldives,on Saturday. “The exhibition is an apt platform for the photo journalists who cannot showcase their talent on paper due to lack of space,” says Mulay,an amateur photographer himself.

With over 10 themes, the photographers’ exhibition brings forth the most newsworthy moments, situations and occurrences in the city. “The cycle is used as a subject in various pictures. The window pane is also used as a medium to express several human thoughts,” informs Prasad Kulkarni, the general secretary of Pune Patrakar Sangh. An entire section is also dedicated to the Anna Hazare campaign and his followers. “Annaji’s campaign gave us an opportunity to explore situational photography all over again. It was great to experience the spirit of youngsters,” recalls Jignesh Mistry,a freelance photographer. The other themes include celebrity encounters and an exploration of the world of the visually challenged. On one side, there is a photograph of Vidya Balan winking at her fans while a serious Vikram Gokhale frame stands by,showcasing the photographers’ experiments with an 18-35 mm lens.

“This (almost) decade old photo exhibition is very close to the hearts of the city’s photo journalists. We try and bring out the real pictures of the city in this annual effort where we get a chance to show what happens behind the curtains of various newsworthy events,” adds Kulkarni.
