Eco-Green,Wastebusters,E-Friends and Go-Green – these groups comprising 126 Science students of Std XI at Fergusson College are on a ‘mission’ to make their surroundings plastic free, while working on their annual Environmental Studies project.
We are also planning long-term campaigns against plastic, says Vidhi Wakharia, group leader,Wastebusters. The students started collecting plastic on September 17. Their first submission was on September 29. We collected 17 kgs of plastic in the first fortnight, adds Roopali Sangale, the Environment Science teacher. The plastic mounds collected are sold to Clean Garbage Management Private Limited,Katraj. The money received will be used to make composts in the campus.
Each student will be marked on several parameters, including creative ways of reusing plastic products. This week,Wastebusters designed plant holders with scrap soft drink bottles, adds Sangale. It was difficult to motivate the students initially. However, after they were made aware of the amount of waste generated, they were quite enthusiastic, adds Sangale.
I was never bothered about waste. I would ignorantly litter. But now, things are different. I am ever-ready to pick up waste plastic. We even initiate campaigns against littering in the college campus. And i hope to do much more with the information we gather from this project, says Megh Naik, the group leader of E-Friends.
After bringing in my first plastic collection,I was awestruck by the amount of plastic which is generated from a single home. All my family members are contributing to this campaign and I have even approached my housing society members to do the same, adds Varda Ketkar, the group leader of Go-Green.
City-based non-profit organisation,The Academic Advisor,is conducting this project.
