When she landed in Mumbai on Monday morning, one of the first things Anastasia Kuznetsova did was to pull open the curtains of her hotel room and soak in the sunlight. Back home in Saint Petersburg,we dont get much sunlight, but here you can feel it on your face, she says. The 22-year-old Russian is in a peppy mood. She bursts into a fit of giggles in response to questions.
The model who has walked for leading brands such as Louis Vuitton,Fendi,Philip Lim,Kenzo,Topshop, and the coveted Victorias Secret fashion show in 2009 is currently in Mumbai to walk the ramp as part of Lakme Fashion Week (LFW). She will be walking for designers such as Manish Malhotra,Nishka Lulla,Krishna Mehta and Sabyasachi Mukherjee, for the finale. I dont know much about Indian designers or their work but when I first heard about the possibility of working in India,I jumped at the opportunity as I love the country, says Kuznetsova, also an avid yoga practitioner.
Like most Russian models, she has humble beginnings. But what sets her apart is that she never consciously planned a career in the industry. Seven years ago,as Kuznetsova watched a fashion show on TV,she decided to give modelling a shot. Intrigued by the glamour and the confidence these women displayed on the ramp,I made up my mind to pursue modelling as a career. I was clueless about the industry I didnt know who the big names were nor did I understand the need to network. I just worked on my walk, remembers the 5 feet-10 inches tall model, whose first assignment included walking for Gucci and Chanel in Tokyo. Since then,Kuznetsova has learnt some lessons. For quite some time,I worked extensively with European magazines and got paid a pittance. Later,I realised that one needs to know ones worth and demand a certain pay, she says.
Today, her portfolio is dotted with shows by several designers, among whom she counts Lanvin,Rick Owens and Dries Van Noten as her favourites. She also loves the fashion industry for reasons other than just the glitz and the moolah. I have come to fall in love with the camera and I particularly like ramp modelling, she says.
One day,she wishes to walk at a show in her home country. I have had a good run so far but all my shows have been outside of Russia. Fortunately, things are looking up and the fashion industry there though at a nascent stage is showing promise, she says.
