As many as 55 experts from Pune have featured in the list of top 2 percent scientists around the world in Stanford University Rankings 2023.
Dr Thanu Padmanabhan, the late theoretical physicist from Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, has earned the top ranking in India.
Globally, the list comprises 210,199 scientists from all fields who are in the top 2 per cent. Of these, there are 4,635 from India (2.2%) and there are 55 from Pune.
There are 18 scientists from SPPU, 14 from NCL, 10 from IUCAA, four from IISER, Pune, three from Bharati Vidyapeeth, two from DY Patil, one from Symbiosis International University, one from COEP, one from KEM and one from PURE Foundation.
In the field of respiratory medicine, Pune’s Dr Sundeep Salvi, Director of Pulmocare Research and Education Foundation (PURE) has been ranked No.1 in India for the third consecutive year and globally in the 52nd spot of 62,427 respiratory scientists worldwide.
Pune’s top diabetologist and Director of KEM hospital’s Diabetes Research Unit Dr C S Yajnik is yet again in the list of the world’s top 2 percent of most-cited scientists.
Among the most-cited scientists and experts include Sujit Ghosh of IISER, Sumit Das of SPPU, Angshuman Nag of IISER, Satishchandra Ogale of IISER, Bhushan Patwardhan of SPPU, Varun Sahni (IUCAA), Smita Zinjarde (SSPU), and several others.
Stanford University’s global list includes top 2 per cent scientists in all fields in 2 categories: career-wise and previous 1 year.
The career-wise list includes everyone from all ages. One drawback of this is senior scientists will have published papers more than junior scientists and it is only they will be consistently right at the top. Nonetheless, this is important for someone who has been contributing for all these years. The second list is of those who have excelled in the last one year, which gives a true picture of actively participating scientists, says Dr Salvi who was recently installed as the President of the Indian Chest Society at the National Pulmonary Conference (NAPCON) 2023 held at New Delhi.
He told The Indian Express that it felt nice to be recognized worldwide and consecutively for three years in a row.
