The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has taken a serious note of the loss incurred in the procurement of mechanical road sweeper which became disfunctional shortly after purchase.

The cantonment board has received a lettter from the Southern Command seeking a statement on loss incurred in the procurement of the equipment.

PCB officials said the mechanical road sweeper was purchased in1985. The machine was used upto 1987. Thereafter, the machine could not be used in the night time as it started emitting a loud noise, causing disturbance to residents .

Though the cantonment board was exploring the possibility of disposing of the machine to the neighbouring municipalities, none of the local authorities showed any interest.

As the engine and chasis of the vehicle was in good condition,it was utilised for mounting a load body and the vehicle was used for carrying garbage till 2006.

However the use of the vehicle was stopped by the PCB due to non-availability of spare parts of the vehicle due to which the vehicle was condemened. The PCB has decided to procure a new mechanical road sweeper.
