Classical music is the mother of the nation. It’s the heritage, culture and tradition on which rests the foundation of our country,” says musician Ajoy Chakraborty,as he begins to talk about music. Realising the need of preserving this heritage and see it soar to new highs,he feels that children need to learn it from childhood so that those who are genuinely interested in music can unleash their potential once they grow up and have a solid base.

Chakraborty who began performing classical music on stage at the tender age of eight, says that he used to also act in his childhood days and that too in the role of musical player. Talking about India’s contribution to classical music,Ajoy says,“India has a rich history in terms of its classical music offerings to the world and there is still a lot to explore in classical music”.

Emphasising on the development and flourishing of classing music Chakraborty feels the need of a well-organised scientific method to teach classical music to today’s generation. “This was precisely the thought that went in when I started my own music school –Shrutinandan,” he says, adding,“The name has 12 letters, standing for the 12 notes. The first and the last letters are S and N stand for Sa and Ni respectively.”

“I sincerely feel that there is a need of introducing and teaching classical music and that is why Shrutinandan was started and it does exactly that by seeking talent and nurturing talent from across the country”,informs Chakraborty. Chakraborty also began a website – http://www.shrutinandan.org – to demonstrate the different facets of music – swaras, layas and so on.

“Performing live in Pakistan was an exceptional experience and its through classical music that we can strengthen the bond of peace between two countries. Both the countries share the same passion for classical music and today you can notice many a Pakistani singers have scaled new heights of success in the realm of music,” he says. Another feather in his cap is the fact that he is the first Indian classical vocalist to be invited by the government of Pakistan to perform in Pakistan. “I strongly feel that there is a need to spread the essence of classical music throughout the world, and what better way to strengthen ties than to play with musicians sans borders,” he says before concluding.
