The Pune railway division has generated nearly Rs 1,200 crore in revenue through passenger services in 2023-24, of which 80 percent was contributed by Pune station alone.
Being the busiest station among all stations under the Pune division, Pune has served nearly 21.33 million passengers from April last year to March this year. However, the total passenger traffic under the Pune division is 55 million, including suburban, non-suburban, and reserved regions. Of this total, Pune station contributes nearly 40 percent.
According to railway officials, the resurgence in revenue and passenger traffic signifies a revival for the division following the substantial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. “The upcoming years are poised to generate even more revenue as a few additional stations have been incorporated under the Pune division,” said Rampaul Barpagga, the spokesperson for the Pune railway division.
After the Railway ministry’s recent decision to incorporate the Daund-Manmad section, a total of 30 additional stations have been brought under the Pune division. These stations were formerly administered by the Solapur division. With this inclusion, the Pune division now oversees a total of 102 operating stations.
Additionally, the total revenue receipt of the Pune division for the year 2023-2024 is Rs 1,797.49 crore, which includes revenue from passengers, ticket inspections, cargo, parcel, and other miscellaneous sources. This total revenue is 15.8 percent more than the previous year and 5.2 percent more than the target.
Additionally, railway officials have reported that the contribution of the Pune division to revenue has propelled the Central Railway (CR) to become the region with the highest passenger transport that has generated a total revenue of Rs 7,311 crore in FY 2023-24.
CR has secured the first position among all regional railways by registering an eight percent increase in the number of passengers. With this, CR has achieved a growth of 14 percent revenue compared to its previous FY 2022-23, which generated Rs 6,414 crore in revenue.
