Police officials said efforts are underway to identify and trace the accused’s associates.
A 25-year-old woman has accused a youth from Ramamandi area of Batala of raping her on the false promise of marriage, assaulting her, and issuing death threats. Police have also invoked charges against the accused’s unidentified associates for their alleged role in the crime.
According to the complaint, the accused, identified as Jagdev Singh, first befriended the victim and gradually gained her trust by promising to marry her. The woman alleged that Singh later sexually assaulted her on the pretext of marriage.
The victim stated that Singh subsequently lured her to Zirakpur, where he allegedly raped her again with the assistance of his associates. The identities of the accomplices are yet to be established.
The woman alleged that when she later insisted on marriage, the accused refused, assaulted her, and threatened to kill her. Following sustained mental and physical harassment, the victim approached the Ajitwal police station in Moga district to lodge a complaint.
As the incidents primarily fell within the jurisdiction of Zirakpur police station, the Ajitwal police registered a zero FIR in accordance with procedure and transferred the case to Zirakpur for further investigation.
Police have registered a case against Jagdev Singh and his unidentified accomplices under sections 64 (rape), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 190 (offence committed by multiple persons), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
