Over 20,000 appear for NEET

The first National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission in undergraduate course in medicine was conducted across the country on Sunday.

The first National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission in undergraduate course in medicine was conducted across the country on Sunday. Nearly 20,000 students took the exam from various centres in the city. Although the overall paper was deemed ‘okay’ by students, there were complaints of out of syllabus questions in the biology paper.

What came as a surprise for many students were that they were asked to bring a post card size photograph along with the other listed documents.

“CBSE had put up a notice on their website a few days ago asking us to download the document and paste a passport size photograph on it. Since I had seen that link,I had taken a photograph along with other documents. Names of a few who did not bring photographs were noted down and photos were clicked on the spot,” said Monira Zeya, from Kendriya Vidyalaya. “There were some questions in the biology paper that were out of syllabus. Otherwise, the paper was okay,” Monira added.

Talking about the paper,Aakash Choudhry,of Aakash classes, said,“The overall NEET 2013 paper quality can be rated as good. If we talk about physics, the level of questions is relatively higher than the previous year AIPMT exam. Although the exam is based on NCERT,some questions were out of NCERT syllabus. The chemistry paper, was a typical medical entrance exam test paper. Equal weightage was given to all the three sections — Physical,Organic and Inorganic Chemistry,” he said.

Choudhry too said there were some discrepancies in the biology paper.

“Some statements were rectified in the new edition of NCERT,but the question framed seemed to be from the old edition with incorrect information. This created confusion among the students. Some questions were not from the current edition of NCERT. Student should be given due benefit for such questions,” he said.

The exam was conducted in offline mode in all states except Karnataka where the examination has been postponed to May 18 due to elections.

Three different sets of question paper were made.
