One woman show

She is the one to gather the shreds of the illusory relationship between the romantic leads of the play.

FTII will mark World Theatre Day today with a solo performance of the Hindi adaptation of Stefan Zweig’s short story A letter from an unknown woman

She is the one to gather the shreds of the illusory relationship between the romantic leads of the play. She is the embodiment of a sacrificial love and the also the personification of self absorbed dilettante pianist. When Asima Bhatt,a National School of Drama (NSD) alumni scripted the play Ek Anjaan Aurat Ka Khat she wanted to explore every shade of emotions and so came into being the play that after its first show in 2004 has toured many cities to display various expressions of an artiste.

The play will be performed at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) today to mark the World Theatre Day. Made into films and staged in many languages the German author’s creation manages to sustain its charm through the long passage of time. The romantic yearning, failed attempts to attain true romance, the pining for love in Zweig’s has been told time and again but not in a solo performance. “The play has all shades of emotions. In fact,it’s a sea of emotions so to test the actor in me I decided to take it up for a solo performance. I as an actor bring out the expressions and emotions of each and every character in play,” says Bhatt.

The hour-long play will have Bhatt displaying an array of emotions as she one buy one she steps into the shoes of each and every character. “An anguished husband,a dedicated lover,a self absorbed, ignorant person and the feeling of inextricable impasse as well as experience of numerous missed opportunities, all these are some of the emotions the characters go through in the play and in a solo performance only person performs all this,” elaborates Bhatt.
