The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) elections held after ten years on April 26 elected city-based Dr Sanjay Gupte apart from eight others for the governing council body.
Elections held ten years ago to the MMC had to be scrapped as the postal ballot system was challenged by several people. Ballots were collected and then posted. This led to several irregularities, said Dr Sanjay Gupte,president-elect of Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Society of India. An administrator had been appointed to the MMC for the last ten years and it was only in December last year that the high court allowed elections to the body. MMC is a quasi-judicial body, which has the power to punish erring medical practitioners. There were 38 candidates in the fray and around 12,000 doctors voted. The IMA has devised its own panel and most of the doctors were elected from the panel. This included Gupte,Dr Kishore Tawri,Dr Ravi Wankhedkar and Dr Uddhav Deshmukh among others.
