When an invite to the opening of Jimmy Hu dropped into our inbox, the wisecracks began immediately. The department echoed with Jimmy Who? and Hudunit, and of course the invite itself cracked everyone up with the promise of the Hu’s who present at the launch. With so many good laughs,it was quite natural that we began liking the place before we’d even been there.
When we finally did get to Jimmy Hu,we liked it even more. Set in an old building in the Sanskriti block at the quiet end of lane 7,Koregaon Park, our first impression of Jimmy Hu was twinkling fairy lights, and the sound of busy chatter beyond the wall. In a very Goan cafe-esque touch, two old-school scooters stood to greet visitors at the verandah entrance. A wall on the far side of the room is plastered with latticed windows and mirrors with peeling paint, while at the top a window peeks into a crow’s nest where the DJ sits at his console. The bar runs along the length of the room, with some interesting-looking kegs in the backdrop, painted over in different colours and oriental characters. The bartenders were friendly and attentive, and had ready recommendations for confused guests.
Jimmy Hu’s specialty lies in fresh fruit cocktails. There’s also the option of a giant Jimmy Jar; no explanations needed there. We asked for a Jimmy Special (fresh orange and vodka) and a regular vodka mixer. The fresh fruit surprisingly made quite a pleasant difference from regular fruit cocktails and was zesty and delicious but could have definitely had more alcohol.
Jimmy Hu,we learned, serves finger food exclusively, which make sense for a casual watering hole. The menu is divided evenly in vegetarian and non-vegetarian items, but we did find greater emphasis on the non-vegetarian items. Of the two veg items that we tried, the Pepper paneer was spicy, with a crispy coating, but the flavours were similar to those used in the mushroom starter. Of the non-vegetarian section we tried Fish skewers,Seafood tempura,Chicken stay and Grilled chicken. The tempura batter was fried to a blonde-gold crisp, stuffed with fish and squid a happy accompaniment to any drink. The Chicken satay was studded with bits of peanut, while the Fish skewer was dressed in a coriander marinade. Fair warning, the Grilled chicken while delicious, should either be had on its own or before the more spicy items so you can truly appreciate its quiet flavour.
Brought to the city by the makers of the another popular watering hole in the city,WTF!,Jimmy Hu seems to get the vibe of a fun nightspot just right. While the food and drinks are pleasant enough, the real highlight of the place is its atmosphere. So,Hu’s up for a night out on the town?
