On the concluding day of the leadership lecture series at the MAEER’s MIT School of Government, speaker of the Goa legislative assembly,Pratapsingh Raoji Rane spoke about the deteriorating education system of the country. “To become a clerk, one should be educated till class VIII. But to become a member of parliament, the only qualification needed is that the person should be more 25 years of age. As a result the country is being run by a bunch of uneducated people”,he said.

People in India still think that we should have caste census, but for the rest of the world there are only two castes —educated and uneducated,he said. He spoke about the Westminster system, and later explained about the origin of the word ‘speaker’ in context of the modern day parliament. He said the practice of having a speaker in the House of Commons was started by Charles I in the British Parliament and he was the medium between the king and the House.

When asked about the impartial role of the speaker in the context of the controversies involving the speakers of Jharkhand and Goa,he said that in both the cases the speaker did not do anything unconstitutional.

A model parliament was arranged by the students where Rane acted as the speaker. Ashwinikumar,a student played the role of the prime minister, while Pralhad Narayan Singh was the opposition leader. During the question hour, students raised questions on the political interference in IPL,Right to Education Act,Mangalore plane crash and various issues of national importance.

Devendra Pai,another student said,“The college organises a model parliament every year, and it gives us a sense of direction. We are going on an international trip for three weeks .We will visit the British Parliament and meet some politicians. We would also go to France,Netherland,Switzerland and Belgium. The trip is followed by an internship with politicians in India. Last year some of our seniors worked with LK Advani during the general elections.”
