The members’ enclosure at the race course witnessed a rather unusual setting on Saturday. As race enthusiasts gathered for the Portside Cafe Super Sprint, they were pleasantly surprised by an exhibition of designer furniture displayed on the lush lawns. The exhibition by the Portside Cafe showcased bar furniture, arm chairs, travel bags and more, themed on the psychedelic and rock ‘n’ roll era of the 60s and the 70s.
At a glance, the colourful flower-power themed barrel looked like an innovative coffee table, but on a closer look, the barrel opens up into a mini-bar,while the middle section slides upwards to reveal a glamorous mirrored counter to serve drinks on. Inspired by the anti-war protests of the 60s,slogans like ‘Stop War’ and ‘Spread the Love’ are printed over clip-art flowers and rainbows on the leather.
Another liquor storage cabinet showcased at the exhibition is themed on the legends of rock and roll from the 70s. The printed leather on the cabinet is patterned with little liquor bottles labelled with the names of rock stars like Jim Morrison,Sting,Bob Marley and John Lennon.
The bright flower-power themed furniture is contrasted with dull grey shades of furniture themed on the Woodstock Concert of 1969. A grey leather cabinet is printed with faces and imagery in fading shades that signify the legendary three-day concert. Any music enthusiast would fall head-over-heels for the little detail at the bottom of the left cabinet door a print that reads ‘Woodstock August 15-18,1969’.
A slender suitcase placed on a quad pod, opens up into a case study table with two big pockets to contain important documents and a smaller pocket for other knick-knacks. The case study comes in a funky green and white exterior with a mix and match contrasting interior.
The furniture is my tribute to the music with which I grew up. Music itself has been an inspiration for my works, says designer Bobby Aggarwal,Portside Cafe Furniture Studio, adding,
Sometimes people don’t have enough space for a lavish bar,so they can indulge in these compact bar solutions for their homes.
Apart from furniture, the exhibition also displayed travel and sling bags in printed leather with the same themes.
