Central Excise Day celebrated
The Central Excise and Customs Department celebrated Central Excise Day the other day. Arun Nigavekar,former vice chancellor of University of Pune and former chairman of UGC,was the chief guest. KC Singh,chief commissioner,Central Excise and Customs,welcomed while A Vasudev,commissioner,central excise,Pune-1 gave the inaugural address. Nigavekar awarded Samman Patra to 15 officers of the department and six assessees. Every year,February 24 is celebrated as Central Excise Day as the Central Excise and Salt Act was enacted in 1944 consolidating different tax statutes on this day.
Painting competition
The Amway Opportunity Foundation (AOF),the corporate social responsibility arm of Amway India,organised Nanhe Chitrakaar Competition 2010,a painting competition for children of Amway distributors,as well as special invitees from Jagriti School for Blind Girls. Children were divided into three age groups,4-6,7-9 and 10-12 years and were given the theme Wildlife and environment. The competition was held in 80 cities across the country with around 80,000 children participating. Local school teachers were invited to judge the competition and nine winners (3 in each category) received certificates and gifts,a press note said.
A total of 20 children from Deep Griha,a city-based NGO for AIDS affected,underprivileged children,were treated to a magic show here recently by street magicians from Delhi. Sakaar,social work group of Extentia,a city-based IT company,had invited Aas Mohammad Khan and Babban Khan to perform. According to Aniruddha Adhaoo of Sakaar organising committee,”We organised this magic show for several reasons,such as encouraging and promoting the art of traditional Indian magic and also providing some fun and joy for the children.”
Case study competition
The ASM Group of Institutes organised the sixth edition of ‘Mindscape-2010’,a case study competition. The competition had teams from Tata Motors,Mahindra & Mahindra,Bajaj and so on. The M & M were adjudged the winners and the Tata team was the runner-up. The event was managed by the students of ASM Institutes under the guidance of the faculty,a release said.
Road safety awareness test
A Competition called Maruti Suzuki-Autocar Young Driver 2010 has been organised for individuals aged between 18 and 30 years. It is aimed at putting to test the competitors’ knowledge of traffic rules,awareness of road safety along with their real-world driving skills. The contest is open to all individuals with a valid Indian driving licence,a press note said.
Re-accreditation of Karve institute
The Karve Institute of Social Service,Pune recently underwent a re-accreditation exercise. According to a press release,the peer committee for re-accreditation,which visited the institute from February 22-24,comprised Dr Swapan Kumar Pramanik,vice chancellor,Vidya Sagar University,Dr R Indra,professor of Sociology and director,International Centre,Mysore University,Dr Panka Toppa,director,NISWS,Bhubaneswar.
