Hutching’s mantra: work,play & perform

An active choir group,brain-gym,quizzes and exhibitions of students’ work along with a sound academic base go a long way in ensuring that students of Hutchings High School walk out of its gates as well moulded personalities

It not only carries a name but also a legacy of quality education and overall development of the child. Founded by E Hutchings in 1914, Hutchings High School is run by the Methodist Church and is recognised by Indian School Certificate Examination Board. And from past 125 years,the school has been moulding futures and also keeping up to the latest information,teaching techniques and activities.

Among other facilities,the school offers brainstorming activities like ‘SIP-Abacus and Brain-Gym’ to students for their wholesome brain development. Programmes for concentration and mental exercise are designed and executed along with the studies. These activities not only simplify mathematics and reduce the stress of learning,but also add value to the child’s personality and approach towards studies and work.

Sejal Amritkar,class six student says,“I have completed all the eight levels of Abacus and have won two International ‘SIP-Abacus and Brain-Gym’ competitions at Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Had it not been for the support of my teachers and the specially designed games,I would not have made it to this level.”

Apart from daily assembly,weekly assembly are also held in which students take up various topics and present plays and speeches on the same. “We always look forward to these assemblies,where we not only have fun but also get to learn about the addressed topic in an interesting way,” discloses Abhilasha Pawar,a student of class nine.

The school boasts of a choir group that participates in a Choir Festival,a prestigious yearly event,in which choir groups of many other schools also participate. Abhilasha Pawar also a member of Choir adds,“This is my fourth year in the choir and I have loved every moment of it,because here I can sing my heart and I am not bounded by so-called rules. The choir is divided into four parts viz. Altus,Sopranos,Base and Tenors. I sing Altus.”

Pawar’s classmate Priyanshi Vora,who sings Sopranos says,“ I feel awesome that I am selected in the Choir. We practice everyday before our class and I always look forward to our practice sessions. It is the best time of the day for me and also a great stress reliever from the daily studies,” she adds merrily. The school hosts Christmas Cantata festival as an annual event before everybody parts for Christmas vacation. During the festival junior and senior choirs perform melodious carols. They also present plays on Christmas stories.

Talking about the festival,M S Bhonsale,principal of the school,says,“Students thoroughly enjoy the Christmas Cantata and will soon start practicing for the same. It is good break for all,when the school has a festive atmosphere.”

Apart from cultural events,the art and craft department along with the science department puts up an exhibition of students’ work during the academic year. Another event – House Socials,where each of four houses present theme-based dance and plays – is also organised.

The principal says that now the preparations are on for the IT Quiz organised by Tata Consultation Services,which is scheduled on December 3. It promotes IT awareness and encourages young talent.

“We encourage our students to participate in various quizzes and science,mathematics and cyber Olympiad. This not only makes them sharp but also introduces them to the various changes in the market,” adds Bhonsale.

Aditya Wadaskar a class seven student reached the finals of the National Science Olympiad last year and is geared up for this years Olympiad hoping to chinch a Gold this time. “The teachers are very helpful and always boost my confidence,” admits Wadaskar.

Another class seven student,Shreyas Chodhari,says,“I secured 19th rank at the International Maths Olympiad conducted by ‘Education Heal Foundation’ last year. And this year I have appeared for National Mathematics,Science and Cyber Olympiad and I am waiting for the results.”

Not neglecting the sports front,the school also actively participates the ISCE Inter School Football and Basketball Tournament.

The School recently inaugurated their new branch at Talegaon,which also aims to carry forward the legacy laid by E Hutchings and contribute to the development of society by shaping the future of the young ones.
